about
It’s rare that a band forms with the clear aim of breaking up as soon as possible, but that’s what happened in 2015 with Sydney’s political rock group Until Abbott Gets Gone. Of course, like John Farnham (and Tony Abbott himself) farewells are not also as final as some may like.
Usually seen in cult folk festival favourites The Crooked Fiddle Band, founders Joe Gould and Gordon Wallace are adamant that the comeback is necessary: “We never wanted to reform,” says Wallace. “But we felt a cathartic punk anthem might be a timely call to action and we promise we’ll be broken up once again if Abbott gets voted out this election.”
Taking cues from political hardcore punk and infusing a range of heavy influences from Black Flag to Gallows and Idles, the band’s comeback single ‘Farewell to the Onion King’ is a breakup song for an MP they weren’t too fond of in the first place. The not-so-veiled lyrics reference Abbott’s budgie smugglers and offshore detention, and the song’s sweetest moment is a call to Warringah voters.
"We wanted to have a bit of fun in our chosen political direction," says Wallace. “Despite no longer leading the country, Abbott still directs the national conversation, and his denial of climate change still legitimises a point of view we can’t believe has a taxpayer-funded voice.”
Until Abbott Gets Gone is a zero-budget band with the duo recording at home under a model that Gould calls ‘Not-For-Profit Rock ’n’ Roll’: “we don’t expect to be making as much money as your average ex-MP, but our music is available pay-what-you-want and any cash that comes in will be donated straight to charity.”
All proceeds from releases will be split between Greenpeace and the Climate Council.
lyrics
Get out!
Smuggling budgies and your three word slogans
The whole world saw us as racist backwards bogans
I might admit that you've had some achievements
Pity that so many of them involve locking up children
All hail the Onion King!
We well for his lies and voted him in
All hail the Onion King!
He made us cry and made us cringe
It's time to do this - to shake this bad Abbott
A fly in our ointment spewing hateful acid
There's a reason he's starting to look so flustered
This floater is finally getting flushed away
Vote out the Onion King!
Led us twice but never again
We've all been failed by the Onion King
If we throw the dead weight, the ship won't sink
Mayday, mayday, save the date
We're all relying on you Warringah
May 18's next week and it's not too late
to show him the nations raised middle finger
let's celebrate!
Farewell the Onion King
Made us cry and made us cringe
Farewell the Onion King
let's clear the rot and start again
Get out.
Get Gone.
